🥂 Do you know how to make a toast? This invitation to drink together, to honor a person or to celebrate an event goes back to the ancient banquets. In the Middle Ages, it fell into disuse and was even considered barbaric during the Renaissance! Back in fashion, the toast is particularly current at the approach of the New Year. In spite of its English airs, it comes from the old French where the word "toste" refered to a slice of toasted bread, plunged in wine that one drank to the health of a lady. The British changed the word into a "toast", both literally and figuratively. In the past, people used to shock the glasses, some consider this practice inelegant today! Indeed there is a way to make a toast: wait until the end of the main dish, check that all the glasses are full and raise yours no higher than the chin, holding it by the foot; if you still want to clink the glasses, make sure not to cross them. Your tribute will be all the more appreciated if concise! 😥
