On the occasion of the Olympic marathon, which has been part of the Games since its first edition in Athens in 1896, let’s take a look back at the mythical “garçons de café” race. A tradition born in the streets of the capital over a century ago. The year is 1914... In Paris, cafés are a dime a dozen, and waiters are constantly on the move, bottles in hand, serving glasses of Burgundy or Suze directly in customers’ glasses. Speed and skill were highly required when orders exceeded 10 aperitifs! To gain recognition for the profession and raise the profile of the French aperitif, the powerful alcoholic beverage makers are sponsoring a new race. Dressed in traditional black-and-white attire, the waiters compete over a distance of around 2km. The rule? Walk as fast as possible without ever running, while taking care not to drop their tray. Today, the race has returned to the cobblestones of Paris and even crossed the oceans, illustrating a certain French art de vivre in a joyful, good-humored way!
