👌 My little finger told me... Today is tea day and tea means – for the most distinguished of us – a little finger raised! This strange politeness comes straight from the Middle Ages. In those days, everyone ate with their fingers in a single dish that was passed around. But during the great banquets, the lords always made sure to keep one or two fingers dry in order to help themselves to spices and season their dishes. Condiments from the East were indeed rare and expensive and should not be soiled with grease. Lifting the little finger was therefore very practical to continue handling food and drinks. When cutlery appeared, the nobility and aristocracy kept this habit as a social marker. All the more so, as people now like to drink hot tea from pretty little porcelain cups with particularly narrow handles. Nowadays, to avoid looking too snobbish, bring your fingers curled up under the cup. And if you prefer to raise your pinky, never allow it to reach the ceiling!
