The Olympic Games are coming to Paris! Nearly 3,000 years ago, the first Games were held in Olympia, Greece. An opportunity to discover the surprising links between sport and the table. At the time, every four years, the various Greek cities agreed to a truce while challenging each other in sporting events. Greek potters painted their exploits on ceramics used at famous banquets. Red-figure ceramics were invented in Athens around 530 B.C. and gradually replaced the black-figure technique, enabling the artist to achieve greater mastery of detail, to depict very fine elements and give relief to his work. The Greeks developed a wide variety of vase shapes for specific functions. The victors took home amphorae filled with oil from Athena’s sacred olive trees. The winner of the chariot race, received 140 amphorae (5,000 L), while the winner of target shooting on horseback only 4. The vases and their contents could then be sold, hence their wide presence throughout Greece🏺
