Bisque porcelain

15 May, 2022 14:00

🍪 Like a biscuit, bisque porcelain means "fired twice". In fact, it is fired once at 900° and a second time at 1400°, like classic porcelain but without the enameling step. It therefore has all the qualities of porcelain: hardness, fineness, whiteness, but a matte finish. This marble-like finish - reminiscent of Renaissance sugar sculptures - paved the way for two centuries of decorative statuettes. In the middle of the 18th cent., the nobility was crazy about them! Groups of shepherds, puttis and hunting scenes were placed in the center of the table. Mercier merchants transformed them into precious objects by adding bronze or gold. The translucency of the bisque porcelain also allows a very beautiful diffusion of light thanks to the technique of lithophany, dear to Bernardaud even today. It still inspires contemporary ceramists who appreciate its incomparable way of "taking the light"; some of adopt it as preferred, even exclusive medium 🤍
