🌿 In France, May 1st is the lily of the valley festival and this, since the Renaissance when Charles IX instituted the practice of offering each spring a sprig of lily of the valley to the ladies of the court. Although the bell plant has been known for a long time, it was not until the 18th century that flora was scientifically classified, thanks to the Swedish botanist Carl Von Linné. Porcelain factories began to decorate collections with recognizable plants, whose names were written in Latin on the back. The lily of the valley, or Convallaria majalis, has always inspired artists. Tableware is no exception! Emile Gallé, Eugène Grasset or the Limousin artist Dalpayat, apostles of Art Nouveau, created objects where the lily of the valley is king.
