French styles: Louis XV

04 May, 2024 14:00

📚 Succeeding the Sun King was no mean feat, but his great-grandson Louis XV came through with flying colors. The reign of Le Bien Aimé embodied a delicate revolution. The pomp of the court was replaced by intimacy and comfort, soft colors and exotic themes. The rocaille style is an ode to joie de vivre. The arts flourished, thanks to the women who surrounded the king. Queen Marie Leszczynska cherishes concerts featuring Rameau’s music. Madame de Pompadour fell in love with François Boucher’s pastorales and fêtes galantes, embodying a light-hearted spirit and gentle way of life. The new French dress was in fashion. Sèvres porcelain took pride of place at fine dinners, where one indulged in indiscreet confidences. The twists and turns of love in Marivaux’s theater were just around the corner. To be seen and to shine in society, you had yet to show your wit. It is truly the Age of Enlightenment - Voltaire and Rousseau would not deny it!
