From cup to mug

January 10, 2025 10:00

The most common cup ever created is called a litron or square cup, with a height is equal to its diameter. This piece was created by the Manufacture de Vincennes in 1752. It will then come in various sizes, the smallest called “mignonnette”; the largest “Jénieux” or mug. In French, the word « mug » is therefore an Anglicism, even though it shares a common etymology with the « moque de matelot »: a small earthen or tin pot used to measure food and beverage. Originally 12 oz in capacity, the mug went on to lose its handle and grow to 16 oz to accommodate the famous americano coffee. Do you know its history? During the World War II, coffee was so essential for the troops that one soldier consumed more than 10 kg a year. The US Army had to ship tons of coffee to Europe, and often there wasn’t enough to go around. Hating the bitterness of the local espresso, American soldiers stationed in Italy diluted with hot water to give it a more familiar taste
