At the table of Louis XIV

October 08, 2023 14:00

👑 If you were invited to the King's table, would you know how to put on a good show? First of all, your toilette: fly, wig and perfumed gloves are in fashion for both men and women. While the king is comfortably seated in his armchair, you will sit on a stool, folding chair or nothing at all, depending on your favor and rank. The maître d'hôtel announces "Gentlemen, at the King's table" with a tap on the floor. When dishes arrive, take off you hat and wish everyone bon appétit. Remember, wine is always drunk with water. Fingers are allowed for eating, but cutlery is preferred and a goose feather to pick your teeth. Your manners are as important as your conversation: keep your wit sharp! Use the familiar "tu" form of address to the servants, but the formal "vous" to people of high rank. At the end of the meal, don't forget to bow and walk the king to his bedroom. During dinner, if you've been invited to hand the king his napkin, you're the lucky one of the evening!
