Thanksgiving

November 23, 2022 14:00

🦃 Every last Thursday of November, the American people celebrates Thanksgiving. To understand the origin of this holiday, we must go back to 1620 when the Pilgrim Fathers disembarked from the Mayflower in Plymouth. Some of the crew suffered from scurvy and were starving to death. Legend has it that Native Americans came to their aid by teaching them hunting, farming and fishing techniques. Squanto, a former slave who could speak English, acted as an intermediary between the Wampanoag people and the first settlers. The following year, Governor William Bradford organized a great banquet to thank God for the abundant harvest. The Native Americans brought wild turkeys. This tradition remained, as well as the values of gratitude and thankfulness. In 1789, Thanksgiving became a National Holiday. Since then, millions of Americans travel across their country to celebrate this day with their families over a stuffed turkey with sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce and a pumpkin pie! 🥧
