Aux Couleurs de la France, Zao Wou-Ki
Large coupe 36 cm
Limited Edition of 99.
The desire to paint is present in Zao Wou-Ki from an early age: at the age of five, he unleashed his mother’s fury by covering the plates of the family porcelain tableware service with paint. By settling in France in 1948, he wanted to cut himself off from the Chinese tradition. Time allowed him little by little to reclaim the ancestral gestures of Indian ink from 1970. In 2005, he goes to the Bernardaud Manufacture in Limoges and rediscovers his childhood gestures: he has painted directly on porcelain pieces and has created watercolors which has be transposed on Bernardaud coupes.
In 2020, Zao Wou-Ki would have been one hundred years old. To celebrate this centenary, a watercolor made in 2006 has been adapted on a large coupe and is part of a series of five watercolors created by the artist in the colors of France, hence its title.
