Chinese New Year

January 20, 2023 14:00

🐰🏮🐉🧧 Chinese New Year is the first day of the Chinese calendar. The spring festival marks its beginning, lasting for 15 days and ending with the famous Lantern Festival and the impressive Paper Dragon Dance. The word for year is thought to come from the name Nian, a fierce monster that came to prowl the city one night a year, forcing people to stay up until dawn. The main celebrations include a copious meal, followed by a night of vigil, playing mahjong, the distribution of pocket money in red envelopes and the lighting of firecrackers to chase away bad influences. The traditional meal takes place at the elders' home. It includes auspicious dishes, such as fish (鱼 yú), homophone of surplus (余 yú); in northern China, a dish of ravioli (饺子 jiǎozi) their shape evoking that of ingots (元宝 yuánbǎo); in Guangzhou and Shanghai, the eight treasure duck. The traditional dessert is New Year's cake (年糕 niángāo): eating it guarantees growth in all desired areas! 🥟
