“Rouler dans la farine”

September 11, 2023 14:00

🤡 “Rouler dans la farine” [litteraly “to roll in flour“] means to fool, deceive, shortchange or even to scam. It comes from the habit of comedians to cover their face with flour in order to play a role, endorsing someone else’s identity. Culinary-speaking, to roll in flour keeps its original meaning and describes the action of covering a produce with flour, most of the time to fry it. It can be done to whiting for instance [“merlan” in French], hence the familiar use of the word to designate a hairdresser! Why? Because in the 18th century, hairdressers used to end their working day covered in flour after sprinkling it on so many wigs! With this flour, at least ten thousand unfortunate people could have been fed, it was claimed in 1775 when peasants demonstrated in Versailles. Thus started the Flour War, a revolt that led to the French Revolution 🇫🇷
