Kaolin

January 08, 2024 14:00

🤍 Do you know what makes the incomparable whiteness of porcelain? Kaolin, a white clay known to the Chinese since the Han dynasty, two millennia ago. Immaculate pieces such as those from Dehua have made the reputation of the “Whites of China” and fascinated Westerners. Marco Polo was the first to mention it in the 13th century, but in Europe, the quest to unveil the secrets of this white gold was a long one. In France, in 1768 in Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche, near Limoges, a surgeon discovered this material, then used as soap by his wife to bleach her linen. Thanks to the exceptional quality of the its kaolin, Limoges set itself apart with manufactures like Pouyat, preferring the purity of white to the busy decors in vogue. For a long time, wood-firing was the source of minor imperfections, hidden by painters under “jetée” flower decorations. Gradually, technical progress made it possible to manufacture pieces of unrivalled whiteness and purity, making Limoges famous the world over 🌞
