Ships biscuits

June 04, 2023 14:00

🍪 Ever since the beginning of the great sea voyages, mankind has been faced with a vital problem: food preservation. So they began to make biscuits from wheat, sourdough and water, which were perforated to facilitate dehydration. This double cooking allowed the "bis-cuit" to be kept on board for many months. It was so hard that it could only be eaten after being broken into pieces and soaked in water, wine or soup. Even so, some sailors preferred to eat their biscuit in the dark... not to see the little maggots or molds that inevitably showed at the end of the voyage. Some of these old biscuits have been preserved to this day, and sold at auction for up to several thousands of euros! In fact, the inscriptions made by their original owners bear the memory of great events such as the Battle of Trafalgar, the American Civil War or the polar expedition of explorer Ernest Shackleton in 1907 🥶
