Gaulish banquets

November 16, 2023 14:00

Did Gaulish banquets really resemble those in the Asterix albums? Between myth and reality, let's deconstruct preconceived ideas!
🎉 Yes, the Gauls - ancestors of the French - loved to feast. Every year, the people of Gaul got together to share a good meal. Passing travelers were warmly welcomed, and it was only after the feast that they were asked who they were and what they had come to do in this country.
🪑 No chairs nor benches, but straw or wolf skins to sit around a low table. Guests are placed in concentric circles, the richest and most powerful in the center.
🐗 No, the Gauls didn't eat wild boar, but pork, poultry or mutton, cereals, fruits and vegetables. They also enjoyed mead, a fermented beverage made from water and honey.
🗡️ Were the Gauls barbarians? Most of the time, banquets were an opportunity to compete in eloquence. But during these oratorical jousts, things sometimes got out of hand... That is why spears and shields were never kept far away, but hung on walls or carried by servants!
