The fork

January 30, 2023 14:00

🍴 Of the three main types of cutlery, the fork has had the hardest time being adopted! Indeed, when it arrived in France in the 16th century, its bad reputation precedes it because it is associated with the figure of the devil. At best it is perceived as a symbol of dissolute morals... However, it has been used elsewhere for a long time: among the Sassanid Persians in the 3rd century, then in Italy where the "little fork" with two tines had been introduced following the union of a Byzantine princess and a Venetian doge. In France, we owe its arrival to Henri III. The king brought back from Italy this curious instrument that allowed him to prick the food without staining his "fraise". Good manners finally imposed the three-pronged fork on the tables, even if Louis XIV continued to eat with his fingers. At the end of the 17th century, the fork gained its fourth tine and its flat and wide back to show the coat of arms of its owner. Since then it has changed very little, but has finally found its place at the table! 🍽️
