French styles: Second Empire

June 15, 2024 14:00

From 1852 to 1870, the Second Empire style prevailed, richness and exuberance were the watchwords. Private mansions were lavishly decorated with crimson colors and drapery. Upholstered chairs and exotic plants in the new winter gardens were in vogue. Fanciful, oriental and gothic inspirations were combined with new industries. Barbedienne’s papier-mache and bronze objects being a hit at the Universal Exhibitions. Bernardaud’s Eugénie de Montijo service is a great success. It was also a time of revolutions: « Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe » overturned the codes of painting, while Pasteur put France at the forefront in the field of science. Having one’s portrait taken on film was the latest trend, as it was all about showing off. Strolling along the grand boulevards by Haussmann, experiencing the new cafés-concerts where Offenbach was played and for the lucky ones, attending the imperial parties with their sumptuous banquets.
