🦅 In 1804, Bonaparte was crowned emperor and immortalized on canvas by Jacques-Louis David. The arts had but one goal: to glorify Napoleon. Interiors were adorned with imperial emblems such as the bee, the eagle and the laurel wreath. French luxury helped boost his political power. The silk industry took off again, and goldsmithing reached its apogee. Neoclassicism revived the imperial Rome. Solid mahogany furniture were decorated with gilded friezes and ornaments. A new voluptuousness is revealed in the marbles of Canova and the figure of the swan. The empress made Malmaison a place of relaxation, where guests could admire rare plants and exotic animals. The table was set in the park: Marie-Antoinette’s pastel and flowery plates were put aside, as Josephine much preferred bright colors and painted landscapes! On the menu: turbot, pineapple and punch in memory of her native Martinique 🍍
