Limited edition series of 199
Las Meninas are porcelain sculptures created in collaboration with the Spanish artist Manolo Valdés. The four different versions are distinguished by their decoration Reina Mariana I, II, III and IV and each is produced in a limited edition of 199 pieces.
During his early visits to the Prado Museum in Madrid in the 1960s, Manolo Valdés discovered two famous paintings by the painter Diego Velázquez that would become the primary inspiration for him: the portrait of Mariana de Austria (1652-53) and Las Meninas (1656). From his first creations in art school until today, Valdés has never ceased to reinterpret this character with its recognizable feminine allure in different mediums. For the decors of Las Meninas in porcelain, the artist has drawn his inspiration from very different artists – Joan Miró, Willem de Kooning, Sonia Delaunay, Fernand Léger, Roy Lichtenstein – but also from his own work.
